Ron Jon Cape Caribe Coffee Pot Switch Burns Up

A friend staying at the Ron Jon Cape Caribe Resort (timeshare) in florida just had a switch on a coffee pot burn up and send sparks across the room when turning it on. Whats more is that the GFI outlet didn't trip nor did the breaker. These places must be built pretty poorly.

Why GM needed a bailout...

While I've heard way too much news this year about the economy (apparently most didn't foresee the cyclical recession coming -- every 10 years), Economic Stimulus (Help me big government we didn't plan for this), oh and any other main stream media story that really doesn't affect our lives that much. I still wanted to put a thought out there based on a recent visit to a Chevy dealer for service.

I have driven a 2008 Chevy Impala for a little longer than a year. In that time the brakes have been resurfaced by Chevy dealers three times. The first time at less than 2 months old. The car would shudder when breaking. The second time closer to 6 months old, again shudder when braking. Again now, the brakes have been shuddering but not that much for a few months until I drove down some hilly areas. Now they shudder all the time.

I made a 2:30 appointment to get an oil change and have the brakes looked at. I had a friend coming to get me at 2:45 so I waited out front since it was nice out. When I left the car had not been brought inside yet.

I heard one sales guy trying to pressure a woman into buying a used KIA and she finally got away from him. Not without him leaning on her door as she was getting in the car. No personal space.

Saw another sales guy walk out to an impala on the lot and tell someone over the phone "I have one just like it in black and I drove it to boston the other day, got 30 miles to the gallon". Then he proceeded to say "you'd look good behind the wheel of anything but this would be even better."

Who would shop at a place like this. I was glad that no one stopped to ask me if I they could help with anything while I was standing out front.

Back to the car, called at 4:55 to ask if they were keeping it over night. The guy said that he didn't know anything about my car and would ask. Came back on and said that the wheels were just being put back on and they would wash it up and it would be all set.

Went up to the dealer to get it, they tell me that the brake rotors were resurfaced -- mind you -- resurfaced for the 3rd time? The regular mechanic I'd go to if it weren't for warranty stuff never resurfaces rotors, says it takes too long for the cost savings. Another family mechanic will resurface them once (but when they do they have them turned on a lathe). I have no clue what this dealer did. But they work better, hopefully for a lot longer than a few thousand miles. GM now had to pay again for the warranty work -- 3 resurfacings when they could have just replaced the shoddy brakes put on at the factory. Admit wrong doing or just try to fix it till the warranty runs out -- clearly GM's policy.

They also said that there were blue spots on the rotors from where they had gotten hot. Then they told me that I must ride my brakes or ride them while going down a hill. I reassured them that I knew how to drive and didn't ride my brakes.

I suggested that it was a design flaw and that GM hadn't designed the brakes to properly coo. Which now I have to hope that the brakes don't catch fire and burn up the car because some engineer didn't design the cooling of the brakes properly.

Past vehicles I've had never had brake problems, Ford Taurus needed brakes every 40 or 50 thousand miles (this has held true across 3 different model years for over 600,000 miles). Audi A4 still had good brakes at 50k when it was traded in. So really I'm not sure what on earth GM messed up so bad that I've had to have 3 dealers attempt to fix them under warranty.

Between brake issues, alignment issues, less than stellar sales guys, finance guys discouraging you from buying a car, a dealer that waited 40 days to send a payoff check to the bank, so on and so forth, its really no surprise that GM needs a bailout. But I'm stumped as to why the government is on the hook for this company. After the experience I've had in the last 16 months with Chevy I'm stumped as to why anyone would buy one. A LOT would have to change before I'd test drive one, much less purchase.

I'm not saying that I want to see companies fail, but I'm saying that a bailout from the government might not fix any of the problems that actually exist at GM. Its not fuel efficiency -- which is the only thing most media seems to talk about. GM auto division has been losing money for years. GMAC was profitable and keeping the other part afloat. For a while the truck making division was very profitable and offset the losses from others. But when truck sales plummeted and the price of trucks fell through the floor, and the GMAC arm started to not be so strong, suddenly the whole shops in trouble.

My only fear is that these quality issues isn't just with GM but rather with auto manufacturers and manufacturing in general.

Bed Bath Beyond - Wine Bar Pacifica - Terrible

We found this small piece of furniture on BedBathBeyond.com that we thought would go great for a little piece to have in the corner with some wine glasses and something nice on top.

Ordered it about a week ago, and it arrived today. The box was really quite damaged - apparently Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't ship items with packaging they just throw the item in the truck. Macy's however has shipped everything in a box even if the item comes in a box - so you have some extra packaging.

After the pictures were taken of the box, we opened it up and started putting it together. The directions are just horrendous. A diagram with no lines showing you what goes were, nor anything about what order to do anything. I've put together my fair share of put together furniture and this is by far the worse! The furniture from http://www.ikea.com/ has awesome directions with neat cartoons.

We found out that one of the drawer fronts was broken - where you have to attach the screw - so we set that aside. Continued putting it together - the back of the drawer has no pre drilled holes - so you are kind of guessing on getting it all lined up.

When it came time to attach the side to the base - the cam locks are made out of such cheap metal that when you turn them (so they lock into the wood) - the cam locks bent instead of going into the wood. These are definitely the cheapest quality cam locks ever - I highly doubt they would have held up even if you could get it together.

So now I have a partially put together Wine Bar Pacifica that I have no clue what to do with, I will never be able to get it back into the box. So I guess I'll call them tomorrow and see what they want me to do with this hunk of junk that they sold us. The packaging from this by the way was excessive and made with lots of that cheap Styrofoam that gets the little white bits all over your house.

Overall this experience has made me think twice or maybe more before ever ordering any sort of furniture from Bed Bath & Beyond. Frankly the really cheap stuff from Christmas Tree Stores has been of way better quality than this.

Chevy Dealer Charges $41.18 for an air filter

Just got back from the local Chevy dealer where they charged $41.18 for an air filter - $6.30 of that was labor. I asked the dealer about it and he said that they are $25 in the parts store and inflation has raised the price of everything.

I went to the parts store - it is $17.79 and it probably costs the dealer even less. A K & N reusable lifetime warranty air filter was $48 and change.

Its no surprise that Chevy needs bailouts when dealers are over charging customers for things like air filters.

I called the dealer back and told him what I found out - he offered a free oil change next time around. Which does more than make up for the overcharge, but I would rather see them just not overcharge every single customer they get.

Enterprise Rent A Car - Cash Isn't Good Enough

Recently contacted Enterprise Rent A Car to get a car for an upcoming trip. I had to call three locations to find one that even had cars in stock - the other two didn't, but the website said they did. That is something that the first guy said is "above his pay grade".

The third location then explained that if you do not want to use a credit card - and would rather use a debit card, then you have to provide them with your utility bill and pay stub - and have the address match your license. In addition they put a $300 hold on the debit card plus the cost of your rental.

Clearly something has gone horribly wrong in this country when companies are penalizing people and businesses who choose to pay for what they need with cash / debit card instead of making the credit card companies even more money. Requesting that people show a rental car company their utility bill and pay stub is terrible. Shame on Enterprise Rent A Car.

It's not a matter of not having a credit card, its the point that you should be able to pay with cash, credit or debit without having to give someone a utility bill and a pay stub.

Hopefully other rental car companies are not this rude to their cash paying customers.

Circuit City Manager Says "Order it Online"

A friend of mine today had a very interesting experience at Circuit City. He went into the store to buy a camera and had been given a price over the telephone from Circuit City earlier, so the customer service rep pulled up the item and was ready to ring it up.

However, the item came with some other bundled items which they didn't have in stock, so he got with just a printer, used a coupon from AAA and all was good.

There was another canon camera that he was going to buy and the manager refused to let him us a coupon on it. Stating that the item was on sale. When told that the coupon would work if you type it in online, the manager said "then buy the camera online". So the employee turns the computer (POS machine) over and allows him to stand there and try to order the camera online.

He got very frustrated with the machine running slowly and the keyboard being not normal, that he gave up and left. Decided instead to call and place the order over the phone.

After talking to the sales rep on the phone and the rep attempting to figure out how to sell a camera, he said that he could not sell the bundle as the online training that comes with the bundle is not available in our area. He asked "do you have any other addresses". Well if its not available in a market with 3 Circuit City stores - where else could the Firedog online training be available.

Why is it that you can't be sold online training anywhere? Not sure... Why does Circuit City Firedog online training say its only available in certain markets? It doesn't make any sense. So my friend speaks to the guys supervisor.

The supervisor says the same thing "sorry for the inconvenience". Then he says that the coupon can't be used till tomorrow. At this time my friend had already been on the phone for over an hour. The supervisor offered to call him back when the coupon would be good at midnight that night so that he could place the order.

This was just such a ridiculous story that I felt that others might get a kick out of how unempowered these Circuit City employees must be. So after a long phone call and a trip to the Circuit City store, still no camera ordered.

At least the store seems to have changed their managers - the old manager said that he didn't care that his employees didn't help customers purchase lcd tv's... but that's a whole other story.

Domains Stolen From GoDaddy

I just spoke with someone at GoDaddy and he offered to help this person restore their domain.

He wanted to make sure that it was clear that they do send an email when the email address was changed. He also said that if you discover things like this right away, there is an undo department - which you can contact if you happen to catch things quickly.

The above mentioned 60 day rule is actually a GoDaddy Rule - not an ICANN rule. This rule only locks it based on the first/last name or organization field.

ICANN has a rule that says that if you transfer from one registrar to another registrar it can't be transferred for 60 days.

Domains Stolen From GoDaddy

I've been helping a friend try to recover a stolen domain name (was at GoDaddy) for the last week. Someone logged into the account, changed the email, and all the information on the account to something in India.

Then they transferred the domain name out of the account to a protected name service at name.com

That was over 3 months ago. GoDaddy never emailed to say "are you sure you want to change all your account info, or email address, or transfer this domain". Instead he was left blind sided by all this. Until the hacker changed his password - then he realized that something was up.

When he did discover that all this had happened - and contacted GoDaddy - they said that there was nothing they could do.

I'm pretty stumped as to how all this happened without GoDaddy so much as notifying the customer that their account information had been stolen. But this certainly doesn't make me think too highly of GoDaddy.

I am still hopeful that they will be able to recover the domain name.

He spoke with someone who looked into it all and found out that the registrant info was never changed before they transferred the domain. This was likely because of the icann rules that say that you can't transfer a domain name within 60 days of changing the registrant info.

Why Does National Positions SEO Firm Has To Spam

I'm not sure I really know why this company sends out spam to promote their claim that they can get you ranked better in google, yahoo and msn. If they could, then they wouldn't send out SPAM, instead they would just show up when you went searching for an seo firm.

Yesterday and today I received emails from this "National Positions" company in California claiming to offer their seo services to help me rank better. The funny thing is that they send you a message with the subject line of "suggestion re: domain.com/contact" or some other form. As if anyone cares if their contact form is ranked!

All of these messages also came from random gmail accounts with strings of numbers in them, clearly some kind of spam operation that is pretty automated. Why they waste their time and more importantly why anyone calls them is beyond me.

So am I the only one getting these messages?

Why GM's OnStar Service Sucks

I just bought a vehicle with GM's OnStar System installed and it came with a 1 year subscription. I've had some privacy concerns in the past about Onstar however, I spend a lot of time in the middle of nowhere - so I thought it would be nice.

I called and setup Onstar on Friday and yesterday they sent me an email with my car information including the mileage, tire pressure, etc about my vehicle. I went to the website to login and it said that it couldn't find my account number.

So I did what it said - called OnStar Service and Support. I was directed to someone and after a 10 minute phone call it was determined that I could not login to my account because it was too new. The Onstar Rep told me that it can take 3 weeks to get my online account setup.

They said that because OnStar works with a third party vendor for the OnStar website, it can take three weeks for the account to get setup. I have no idea why this is going to take three weeks to create a login unless they are sending the information via smoke signals.

We build websites all the time that have databases that need to be sync'd up and it doesn't take three weeks like OnStar does. Instead its done either instantly or nightly.

After questioning the OnStar Rep as to why it was going to take three weeks for them to create my account, I got nothing other than the standard response of that is what the third party said it would take.

As to why OnStar can send me an insane amount of information about my car - including my car's phone number - it can't create a login for a website in less than three weeks. This is why OnStar went from being really cool to really bad.

Mosso - All PHP sites down again

I have most of my sites hosted with mosso - and things are always great or terrible. Right now I found out that they fall into that terrible category. As in all PHP 4 and 5 sites are down.... not slow... but down - 404 error page not found down.

I have had this problem several times with Mosso over the 8 months that I have had hosting with them - however I'm not quite sure what else to do - as the site would likely need more than a dedicated server to run.

So if you have mosso - make sure you send them an email with your downtime documentation and request the credit to your account - 1 day free for every 1 hour of downtime.

I even called the tech support line and the guy had the nerve to tell me that I could check the status page.

Its funny that right now my sites are down - mosso.com is up...

This may seem kind of ranting - but I just want to make sure anyone who is thinking of using mosso - realizes that it can be an up and down ride.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A Singapore national serviceman who sashayed into a lift early one morning wearing only a pink bikini has been handed a day's jail and a S$11,000 ($7,529) fine by a court in the city-state, a newspaper said on Tuesday.
Tan Wen Zhong, 21, admitted to five charges, including "outraging the modesty" of the woman who shared the lift with him and "fraudulent possession of women's underwear," Singapore's Straits Times reported.
The paper said a subsequent police search of his apartment turned up 46 pieces of women's underwear and bikinis as well as four obscene films.

This time he was talking to me about the Godaddy Discount Domain Club. Well I thought about it for a little bit and realized that it would be saving at least $2 per domain even at the bulk pricing and it came with several other things like free cash parking.

After I hung up the phone, I realized that I was sitting on about 40 domains that I wasn't really using.

Mosso is Down!!

Today I wake up to half a dozen or so emails telling me that various sites I run are down. What a wonderful way to start the morning. So I start looking into it and it turns out that 2 of the big database clusters at Mosso (a clustered hosting environment spun off from rackspace) are just not working correctly.

So most of the sites I manage are back up - the ones that are static and the ones that are not relying on these 2 specific mysql clusters. Sadly the 2 biggest sites I run are 2 of the ones on those clusters.

The upside in all of this? Well I will get a free month of hosting for downtime... The downside? Lost revenue, lost reputation, lost traffic, and potentially lost SERP. oh well - lets see how it goes!

If your flying - just accept the fact that there are delays, lost luggage, bad food, annoying passengers and get on with the trip. I try to fly jet blue so that I have the head phones and just watch tv and enjoy the flight. During my lay over I just play a game on my laptop or read a book - I gave up on trying to use the internet at most airports - as it is awful.

Bring your own snacks as the ones you ban buy in the airport are way over priced for what you get.

Check your luggage - nothing stresses me out more than having to sit with tons of luggage at the airport. Sure they might lose it - but you can always get new stuff later if you have to.

If your driving - drive on a less traveled day - or start earlier. When we travel for thanksgiving we always leave at 5 or 6am so we can beat the rush. Sure it stinks getting up - but it is far better than sitting in 3 hours of traffic because someone got in an accident.

This to me is a great move. I have been using an Ampd mobile phone on the verizon network for over a year now. It was a challenge to get it to work - but it works great. I look forward to the day when we can order any CDMA phone and use it on their network.

When I talk to other people about it - they just say that they like xyz carrier better, the problem is that Verizon works where I live and where I travel. AT&T, Tmobile, Sprint, et all do not.

I just hope that this helps to get some phones that run a better software package than the red VZW software.
